Gastronomy Normandy draws upon the fruits of the sea, its dairy produce and apples. If fish is a favourite then try Dieppe Sole with oysters or if meat appeals more then there is the delicacy of the salt marsh lamb, creamy chicken "a la Vallee d'Auge" or duck "a la Rouennaise". Notable cheeses are Livarot, Camembert, Pont-L'Eveque and Neufchatel. Look out for Vire andouille sausages or the "boudin" sausages of Mortagne.
Calvados Surrounded by an orchard of cider apple trees, this group of 16th and 17th century buildings accommodates a press-house, double distillation still and barrels. The Coeur de Lion Calvados that is distilled here by the Drouin family, has been selected by the French government as one of their "100 sites of Excellence in Taste". The Coeur de Lion Distillery is located 28 miles from Bernay and it's advisable to book in advance at:
Route de Deauville RN177, 14130 Coudray-Rabut. Tel: (0)2 31 64 30 05 Fax: (0)2 31 64 35 02.
Boulangerie If you're looking to buy provisons for a picnic lunch and happen to be 15 miles from Bernay on the RN13 then there is the bakery at the hamlet of Ecardenville la Campagne. Look for the sign off the RN13 reading "Ecardenville la Campagne, Pain a l'ancienne overt aujourd'hui". Enjoy several brioche, including a "kougloff" and another called "boskop" with apples or pears. A very good brown bread is their Pain de Campagne and for those with a sweeter tooth then there's a brioche with chocolate and orange.
Camembert Camembert village is only 28 miles south-west of Bernay where along with information displays, the local chees can be bought from the farms in Camembert along with apple cider.
Markets Market day at Bernay is Saturday but if you're looking for a market on Sunday then 10 miles from Bernay is the village of Brionne, which has a wonderful Sunday market where you will be able to buy the famous Pont Leveque cheese. |
