The Water: The Charentonne at Bernay

A tributary of the Risle, the Charantonne has a reputation of being one of the best trout streams in Normandy and runs through a valley typical of the Normandy countryside and described in the writings of Charles Ritz.

This 13km stretch of premier category water runs from Bernay through St-Quintin-des-Isles, Ferrieres-St-Hilaire, as far upstream as Saint-Pierre-de-Cernieres and has a width between 8 and 10 metres. The river is sectioned into 11 beats, two of which are fly only. These are section 8 near Ferriere-St-Hilaire which is 2.5km long and part of section 10, outside Brouglie known as Le Moulin Brule. All these stretches of the Charentonne are controlled by the AAPPMA de Bernay.

To find the fly only stretch near Ferriere-St-Hilaire from Bernay, take the minor road (D33) south to St Quentin-des-Isles alongside the river. Continue through St Quentin onto Ferriere-St-Hilaire and the fly only stretch is just the other side of Ferriere-St-Hilaire going towards Bouglie.

Don't forget to request a description of where the various stretches (parcours) are located and if your French is poor, a bilingual dictionary is a 'must have'. To assist you though, the club has placed small white signs along the roadway to help you identify which stretch you are near.

Best fishing times are Mid-May and June, with September providing an end of season flurry of activity.
